Earth Explorer overview

1) What is Earth Explorer

Earth Explorer is a powerfull tool designed to extract topographics maps data and to view them with a 3D render. Earth Explorer features (in the final version : beta features may differ):

  • A full topographic map processor to generate height map.
  • A character recognition (check the spelling...) module.
  • An OpenGL terrain engine.
  • A fully skinnable GUI.
  • An highly customizable module system.
  • A user-friendly installation interface.
2) The chart data processor

3) Characters recognition

4) The terrain engine
The terrain engine has the following features :
  • Software optimisation such as frustum culling, quad tree, lod
  • Texture generation
  • raw Height map loading (up to 2048*2048 size)
  • detail textures (require a ARB's multi texture extension).

5) system requirement

Minimal Requirement:

  • Windows 98, Me, 2000, XP, or Linux (gcc 2.96, kernel 2.4.) (Mandrake 8.2 was tested...) with XFree 3.3.6+GLX extensions.

  • PII 300mhz.

  • 128 mb ram.

  • Fully OpenGL 1.2 compatible Video Card, with approriate drivers.

  • 25 mb hardisk for installation + 25 mb for cache files.

Recomended Requirement:

  • Athlon or Pentium III at 800mhz or higher.

  • 512 mb ram (the more you have ram, the best it is...).

  • Nvidia GeForce 2 graphic adapter or higher.

  • 200 mb hard disk space (only if you are using the texture cache...).

Optional Components:

  • Network adapter.

Note:

  • It is not recommended to run Earth Explorer with sofware driver such as Mesa under Linux or the Default OpenGL driver supplied by Microsoft under Windows.

  • Earth Explorer was developed under Windows XP and Linux Mandrake 8.2 with GeForce 2 Graphic adapter.

  • Earth Explorer is also available under BSD, but with software OpenGL .
